The seventeenth president of the United States, Andrew Johnson came into office as a result of the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. He was the only senator from the seceded states to continue in office after the secession.

Biography

Andrew Johnson (1808 - 1875) was the seventeenth president of the United States, serving after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Johnson was born in Raleigh, North Carolina to a porter father and a weaver mother. Johnson was a controversial president and was the first U. S. president to be impeached; though he was subsequently acquitted. The major achievement of his tenure as President was the purchase of Alaska from Russia in 1867.
