Montesquieu, Charles
Biography
A political philosopher, Charles Montesquieu is best known for his theory of separation of powers. According to this democratic rule administration is divided into three parts: Government, Parliament and Court. He graduated in law from the University of Bordeaux in 1708. After the death of his uncle he inherited the titles Baron de Montesquieu and Président à Mortier in the Parliament of Bordeaux.
Montesquieu’s literary career started with the publication of his Lettres Persanes (Persian Letters, 1721). His major works include Dialogue de Sylla et d'Eucrate (1724), Réflexions sur la Monarchie Universelle (1724), and Le Temple de Gnide (1725) and De l'esprit des lois (The Spirit of the Laws, 1748).
